There are only a select few people that are Aunts and Uncles, who aren't really, though come to think of it, they are all distantly related to the family in one way or another. But lucky for us, one of them lives in Seoul! One of the reasons I am thankful for Korea is it connected us with Amanda.
A little back story:
Aaron and I graduated high school with Amanda. In high school, we were more acquaintances than friends. One day, after I had arrived in Korea, Aaron was looking through myspace, and found Amanda. He said something along the lines of, "Hey, you remember Amanda G****? She is in Korea!" So we got in contact with her and met up. We had such a great time hanging out with her; she was the piece of home that we needed. We found out that she lives in Seoul teaching English to Korean children. Since then we have become very good friends. Though we don't get to see her all the time, we really enjoy the time we do get with her. Even in the last two years, we have watched each other grow and change as we learn who we are and what we want out of life. She is someone we will always cherish!
We decided Amanda would be Aunt Amanda because she is someone we always want in Lucas' life, and she wants that as well (or so she says ;p). She was the only person to visit us in the hospital after Lucas was born, though family would have been there if they could. But she has become a part of our family in her own right.
So Wednesday she came down to see us for the last time. She leaves for a month vacation in the states on Sunday, and when she gets back, we will be gone. (Though there will be about two weeks when we are both home so we are hoping to get together) We went to Chili's for lunch, which she always enjoys because she is fully immersed in Korean culture, then went back to our apartment to hang out while Lucas took a nap. Aaron ended up coming home early from work so then we went shoe shopping downtown and went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner. Anyone who has spent time with Lucas knows that he is pretty shy and doesn't do well with people he doesn't know. Since we only see Amanda every few months or so, and Lucas' long term memory isn't so long, he doesn't really know her yet. But he was better with her than I thought he would be. He was flirting with her and doing the shy game where he looks away like he is embarrassed. It is a nice change from crying if a stranger is too close.
So here is to you Amanda, we will miss you SOOOOOO much! You just need to convince Matt to leave Korea and start a bar in the states!! I know this great place outside Kansas City!
